Moto GP – Thoughts So Far

What a season it has been so far in Moto GP.  There have been loads of twists and turns, and we are only 9 races in. On a personal note the last couple of seasons have been quite boring, with Casey Stoner running away with it in 2011 and Jorge Lorenzo winning the title quite comfortably last year, despite a challenge from Dani Pedrosa.  Over the past 2 years I have found myself being more excited about the Moto2 race then the Moto GP one.

Moto GP has regained my interest this season however, for 3 reasons:

Marc Marquez making the move up to the big class.

Marc Marquez is the next big thing in the world of 2 wheels. Having watched the young Spaniard in moto3 and moto2 I could tell that he was the real deal.  After signing for Repsol Honda there were concerns that he would spend his first season in the gravel traps or in hospital….. NOT THE CASE.

He has been a breath of fresh air to the top class, winning 3 races already and currently leading the championship. The look on Pedrosa’s face after the first practice session of the year said it all.

With Lorenzo and Pedrosa both injuring themselves, Marc has taken full advantage and the championship is looking like it will go down to the final race. It has been a while since 3 riders have a clear chance of being champion.

Valentino Rossi back on a Yamaha
Yes I have been watching Moto GP for over 10 years now so I am a Valentino Rossi fan….. You can’t be a real fan of the sport if you dislike Rossi. The 2 seasons at Ducati were awful to watch both for fans and the other riders. To see Rossi not being able to even attempt victory was terrible.

This year back on the Yamaha has still been a struggle at times admittedly, with age maybe showing slightly more… especially with Marquez on the scene. That victory at Assen however made the entire motorsport world jump with happiness. That victory gave the fans what they wanted and also some confidence back into the head of Valentino.

Cal Crutchlow mixing it with the factory riders.

Cal Crutchlow celebrates a podium finish

Ohh how great it is to finally see a British rider doing well in Moto GP. Being only 21 years old, this is something I have never been able to experience. Podiums are becoming very common for Cal Crutchlow now , with a Pole position now added to the growing attributes of the Yamaha rider. All that is left now is that first victory!! You just feel that if Cal can get a good start off the line ( this is something he struggles with) he can challenge for the victory instead of playing catch up and running out of laps ( German GP ) The bike has been great for him this season, although it is a shame there aren’t more Factory rides ….. PLEASE DO NOT JOIN DUCATI CAL!!

The next stop for Moto GP is the US Grand Prix at Indianapolis.

Cal his hugely impressive this year, but as you say, Ducati probably isn’t the best place right now – after honing his skills on a Yamaha, the Ducati clearly isn’t the bike to migrate to (see Rossi and Dovizioso). Plus, Cal is fastest at the end of a race, which is currently the worst feature of a the Duke, it just eats it’s tyres in 12 corners. Trouble is, with no Hayden, there’s 100% a space there…hopefully find out more at Indianapolis
