Marcos Rojo needs to be the first of many to join Manchester United

Manchester United have today completed the signing of Argentinian defender Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon.

The 24-year-old has signed a five-year-deal, with the transfer fee believed to be around £16million. United winger, Nani, has gone in the other direction on a season-long loan deal which will see United pay all of his wages as normal.

Rojo can play in either a centre-back or left-back role which is perfect for United right now, with fellow new signing, Luke Shaw, ruled out through injury.

Although this is a good signing for United, Louis Van Gaal still needs to ensure that he brings in another three or four players if United are to get back into the top four.

Rojo has signed a five-year-deal

Last Saturday’s opener against Swansea showcased just how weak this current squad actually is, especially at the back.

Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic all left Old Trafford at the end of last season and before today had only been replaced by Shaw.

Evra’s cover at left-back, Alexander Buttner, also left the club at the end of last season.

All of this led to Van Gaal having to give Tyler Blackett a debut against Swansea, along with Phil Jones and Chris Smalling at the back. He later had Ashley Young covering left-back towards the end of the match.

Van Gaal needs to bring in another one or two quality defenders in order to replace the four that left last season.

tumblr_inline_n8710q22BR1reu1xhDortmund’s Mats Hummels is an option that United should  go for. They have been linked with the German for weeks now but have yet to make an official bid for the player.

He would add a lot of stability at the back, something that you definitely don’t get with Smalling, who I actually named on my list of players that Van Gaal should sell.

Moving up into midfield, I think that United need to  bring in a defensive centre-mid along with an all out attacking winger.

With Michael Carrick currently injured there seems to be a lack of quality in this role. Darren Fletcher has been great at making a comeback after battling illness but I just don’t think he has the quality to be in the starting 11.

Names that spring to mind when trying to improve this area include Bastian Schweinsteiger and Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira, both of which won the World Cup with Germany in the summer.

Khedira has been linked with Arsenal all summer and was left out of Real’s squad to face Atletico Madrid last night, which means that a deal could surely be made with Real.

Even though Arsenal can offer him Champions League football, I still think United would have a good chance of signing him. Van Gaal is a manager that many players want to play for and surely the name Manchester United still means something to the big players?

As for Schweinsteiger, he has been one of the best central midfielders for many, many years both defensively and going forward. His age might mean that United can buy him for a decent enough price.

Di Maria would add much need quality to the squad

That just leaves me with the all-out attacking winger that I mentioned….. and of course you all know that the man I am referring to is Angel Di Maria.

Di Maria would be the big name signing that United fans have been looking for and would certainly inject some pace and quality to their attack.

No matter what the cost, Van Gaal needs to at least try and sign the Argentinian to at least show the fans that the club are trying to improve the squad.

Di Maria would bring so much to the team and he would definitely work well with Wayne Rooney and would also allow Juan Mata to play in a more familiar role.

The players that I have mentioned are just a few examples of who I think would be good signings for Manchester United.

Time is running out for Louis Van Gaal to make his move and he will not be wanting to leave it last minute like David Moyes!!

Who do you think Van Gaal should sign? Who can improve this United squad?

DiMaria would be huge for Manu! It would be great to see him playing English League Football. Good luck with the new acquisitions.

I actually think Ron Vlaar would be a great signing. He’s not the big name everyone wants, and at 29 he goes against United’s policy, but the team needs players for the here and now and to get the defence looking solid in 3-5-2 (something which is badly needed and at the current rate will take at least few months and a lot of points dropped). Vlaar knows the system inside out, thrived under pressure at the World Cup in the middle of the back three, and also has the Premier League experience, and leadership, that’s been lacking so far. Plus he’s started this season in great form, and he wouldn’t be too expensive.
