World Cup 2014 – Round of 16 Preview: Brazil vs. Chile

Brazil vs. Chile

Brazil

How did they make it through?
The host nation made it through Group A with two victories and a draw to their name. Their campaign started with a 3-1 victory over Croatia, which turned out to be much trickier than fans had expected. Croatia took a shock lead early on when Marcelo put the ball into his own goal. Brazil never really got going but Neymar and Oscar came to their rescue. The second match did not get any better for Brazil as they played out a 0-0 draw with Mexico. Brazil were less than impressive, although they did force plenty of saves out of Guillermo Ochoa. Brazil’s defence look weak once again though and Mexico had plenty of opportunities to win the match. Brazil finally looked like a dangerous attacking force in their final match as they defeated Cameroon 4-1. Neymar was again their stand-out player as he bagged himself a double, with Fred and Fernandinho scoring their first goals of the campaign.

Neymar has been Brazil's best player so far

Players to watch out for:
Brazil’s main man of the competition so far has been Neymar. The Barcelona player has scored four goals and has been influential through all three matches. Neymar does not look like he is feeling any pressure what so ever and looks the most composed player within the squad. The 22-year-old has now scored 35 goals in 53 internationals for Brazil and it generally looks like this kid is just getting started. He is a game-changer and will be very dangerous as this World Cup enters the knock-out stages.

Chile
How did they make it through?
Chile managed to finish as runners-up in Group B after defeating Australia and Spain in their opening two matches. Chile would end up losing 2-0 to group winners Holland but their performances have had a positive effect on the fans. The South Americans attacked right from the very first whistle of their campaign and were 2-0 against Australia after 15 minutes. Chile’s attitude continued on into their second match against Spain, with the World Champions unable to cope with their attacking play. Chile went on to beat Spain 2-0 and actually knocked the reigning champions out of the competition. It took 78 minutes in the final game for Holland to take the lead as the Chileans finally began to look tired in a match but it didn’t matter as they were already through to the knock-out stages.

Brazil will have to be wary of Sanchez

Brazil will have to be wary of Sanchez

Players to watch out for:
Chile’s successful campaign has been mainly down to the effort from the whole squad rather than individuals. All five of their goals have come from five different players. If i had to narrow it down though I would say that Alexis Sanchez and Gary Medel are the ones to look out for. Sanchez stands out as the most talented and skilful member of the team, with the Barcelona striker looking very confident on the ball. He is not afraid to take players on and his movement has been great so far. If put in a goal scoring opportunity, you would definitely back him to score. As for Medel, he has been excellent for Chile at the back and it is easy to see why he has been given the nickname of Pitbull. Medel is not scared to put in a challenge and was especially effective when they knocked Spain out of the competition.

Overall prediction – 2-1
Tonight’s match will be Brazil’s most challenging one so far and if they do not improve on their group stage performances they could be at risk of an early exit. Chile, as we all know, will attack right from the get-go and Brazils defence will have to be very sharp as they cannot afford to make a single mistake. It will be a close match but I think that the quality and confidence of Neymar will be enough to send Brazil through to the quarter-finals.
