Marc Marquez on pole for the Moto GP Spanish Grand Prix

Marc Marquez will start tomorrow’s Spanish Moto GP race on pole after a record-breaking performance at Jerez.

Marquez, who had swapped bikes earlier in the session, produced a lap-time of 1:38.120 which beat Jorge Lorenzo’s six-year-old track record.

Lorenzo will start from second place on the grid ahead of fellow Spaniard Dani Pedrosa.

Valentino Rossi will start from fourth place after struggling to keep up with the three young Spaniards.

It was Lorenzo who was quickest after the first run with a lap time of 1:38.541, just ahead of Marquez and Pedrosa.

After all the tyre changes it was Marquez who tried to put in a quick lap first. Lorenzo, who was on his out-lap, was in front of Marquez on track meaning the championship leader could only manage a 1:38.601 lap time.

After this set-back Marquez came in to switch bikes, just as Aleix Espargaro crashed out of the session.

It looked as though the track had become too hot for the riders as the times began to fall, with nobody seemingly able to improve their lap-times.

It was looking like Lorenzo could begin to celebrate his first pole of the season as the clock showed one minute remaining.

Marquez was having none of this though and on his final lap of the session produced the record-breaking lap-time to make it four pole positions out of four in 2014.

As predicted towards the end of last season, it is looking like Marquez could be about to dominate Moto GP for many years to come.

It is certainly going to take a mammoth effort from Lorenzo and Pedrosa tomorrow if they are to end Marquez’s 100% in 2014.
