Manchester United’s season has gone from bad to worse in 2014 with last year’s champions currently sitting in seventh place.
Not only are United in seventh place, they are also 11 points behind the final Champions League qualifying position, currently held by arch rivals Liverpool.
With only 12 matches left this season it is highly unlikely that United are going to catch Liverpool and finish in the top four.
That means that there is only one way that United can be in next season’s Champions League and that is by winning the competition this year.
I know many will laugh at the thought of this happening after the performances under David Moyes but I believe that this had to be the main aim now.
Moyes should put all of his effort into the Champions League from now on as the team is not going to gain anything from finishing fifth or sixth in the league.
Improving on seventh place would probably lead to United playing in the Europa League next season, something that no fan really wants to see.
You only need to look at the likes of Swansea and Newcastle to see that the Europa League is a massive distraction.
United should be able to ease past Olympiakos in the last-16 of the Champions League and from then on I believe that if the preparation is right then United can give it a real go.
I personally would use Chelsea’s Champions League winning season as inspiration for this United team.
Like United, that Chelsea side were really poor and finished sixth in the league but somehow managed to beat Bayern Munich on penalties to win the Champions League.
Chelsea also managed to knock-out Barcelona in the semi-finals with some excellent defending throughout both matches.
For me being in the Champions League next season is an absolute must. If United are to attract the big names in the summer then they must be able to offer them Champions League football.
Fourth place is not going to happen so winning this seasons competition is our only option.
How great would it be if United won the Champions League with Liverpool finishing in fourth place….. just ask Tottenham fans what that feels like!
