Rider of the year 2013

The Wheels and Goals award for rider of the year goes to Moto GP rider Marc Marquez.

Marquez took the Moto GP championship by storm in his rookie season and ended up winning the title at the first attempt.

The 20-year-old become the first rookie to win the title in 35 years and broke many other records along the way.

The records broken by Marquez included becoming the youngest rider to earn a pole position, podium finish and race win the premier class of motorbike racing.

The 20-year-old also became the first rookie to win at the challenging Laguna Seca race track in America.

For me, Marquez was a breath of fresh air in a competition that had been declining in excitement over the past couple of years.

Marquez was not only a great racer but he brought some personalty with him, something we haven’t really seen since the early days of Valentino Rossi.

His riding style is truly remarkable and so exciting…. you just never know if Marquez is going to make it through the next corner.

This kid is not scared of anything or anyone, just asked Jorge Lorenzo and Dani Pedrosa, both of which have encountered battles with Marquez.

Marquez rode brilliantly all season long and deserved to win the title. Don’t get me wrong, Lorenzo put up a great fight on an under-powered Yamaha but 2013 belonged to Marquez.

The amount of red number 93 flags and t-shirts at the final race of the season said it all… Marquez is the future of Moto GP!!

Do you agree with my choice? Who would you pick as the rider of the year?
