McLaren have announced their interest in re-signing Fernando Alonso.
Alonso’s future has been under the spotlight after his Ferrari team decided to re-sign Kimi Raikkonen for the 2014 season.
This ultimately means that Alonso will no longer be the number one driver within the team and would not get special treatment over Raikkonen.
Alonso’s relationship with Ferrari is already a strained one after a difficult season. The Italian team find themselves a long way behind Sebastian Vettel and have not been consistent enough for Alonso’s liking.
Alonso had been linked to Red Bull but the world champions decided to sign Daniel Ricciardo from their sister team, Toro Rosso, instead.
There have also been rumours that Alonso was considering taking a year out of the sport.
McLaren team boss, Martin Whitmarsh, has now made it clear that his team would love to see the Spaniard back with them.
Whitmarsh told Sky Sports News :
“Yes, [I would] if I could. Most teams up and down the pit-lane would happily sign Fernando Alonso, he’s a very talented driver.”
This will come as a surprise to many, after the famous fall-out between McLaren and Alonso back in 2007.
Alonso spent one explosive season at McLaren before the pair decided to terminate his contract early. Alonso had been left unhappy after the team had treated rookie, Lewis Hamilton, on the same level as himself.
It looks like all is forgotten now though, at least on the McLaren side of things.
Whether Alonso would seriously consider re-joining McLaren would be the issue here. Even if he and McLaren were on great terms, the team are still not in a position to challenge for the title… meaning that it could be a step in the wrong direction for the Spaniard.
Expect speculation to be rife over the next few weeks.
