Robin Van Persie was the star player as Manchester United beat Wigan 2-0 to win the Community Shield for the 20th time.
The Dutchman scored a goal in each half, showing why David Moyes sees him as United’s number one striker. The 30-year-old’s performance will send a message to United’s title challengers that he means business again this season.
Van Persie himself was very happy that he scored today:
“Its always nice to score, especially at Wembley, its a great day for the fans and for us and for the manager as well. One day, one game in which you can win one trophy, which is what we did, I am really glad for everyone!
The Dutchman also said that despite United only being third favourites for the title, he still believes that the team will challenge.
Van Persie said:
“I believe in this team and I don’t want to be funny, but we are the champions. So based on that, what we are third favourites? How can you explain that? I don’t really care, I believe in this team and I believe that we will compete until the end again”
The champions dominated the game from start to finish and were rarely put under any pressure by the Latics. The only downside for Daivd Moyes was an injury to Rafael, who had to be taken off early on.
United took the lead after five minutes after some great pass and move football which led to Van Persie heading in the opening goal.
Van Persie received the ball just outside of the box and sprung a great pass out to Evra on the left wing. Evra then crossed the ball, finding the head of Van Persie, who’s strong header went past the keeper into the top corner.
United controlled the first half after taking the lead, with goalkeeper, David De Gea, becoming a spectator. Defender Rafael had to be replaced by Chris Smalling after 15 minutes after suffering a leg injury.
It took until the 43rd minute for Wigan to pose a real threat to the United defence. A Wigan free-kick was met by the head of Boyce, who headed the ball across the United goal but Barnett was unable to control his header and United cleared their lines.
The second half saw much of the same from United, controlling the possession in midfield. United got their reward 15 minutes into the second half and doubled their lead through Robin Van Persie.
Some neat attacking play from United saw Danny Welbeck play the ball into the feet of Van Persie on the edge of the box. The striker took a couple of touches before striking the ball with his left foot, with the ball deflecting in off the leg of Wigan defender James Perch.
Wigan never really got back into the game after the second goal, with United cruising to victory and earning David Moyes his first trophy as Manchester United manager.
Do you agree with Van Persie? Will United challenge City and Chelsea for the title?
