Football League Results – League Two

Newport County announced their return to the Football League in style and sent a clear message out to the rest of the division: WE ARE BACK. County ended the day in top spot after a convincing 4-1 thrashing of Accrington Stanley. Harry Worley got things going with a goal on his debut, with Christian Jolley and Chris Zebroski also getting the score sheet.

My hometown club also got off to a winning start, with Scunthorpe beating Mansfield 2-0. The goals came from returning midfielder, Matt Sparrow and striker Sam Winnall on his debut. Mansfield missed a penalty late on as United player, Eddie Nolan was sent off for a handball offense. On a personal note this is a great result for the Iron and I hope that it continues suffering from two relegations in three seasons.

The shock of the day took place at Fratton Park, where title favourite Portsmouth were hammered 4-1 by Oxford. The day had started well for Pompey with Patrick Agyemang putting the blues ahead. That was as good as it got however as Oxford fought back. Two goals each for Deane Smalley and Alfie Potter gave Oxford a surprise away win.

Elsewhere in the division there were convincing wins for Fleetwood Town, Rochdale and Chesterfield.
