Return of the Football League – Championship (Relegation Candidates)

The wait is almost over for fans across the country as this weekends brings the start of the Football League. Over the next there days I will be previewing each division, stating who I think will be the teams to watch out for at the top of league and also those who I think may be battling with relegation.

Today I will be focusing on the top division of the Football League, the Sky Bet Championship.

Favourites for Relegation:

Yeovil Town

Yeovil Town – Promoted to the Championship for the first time in their history last season, Yeovil will be looking to cause some upsets. The squad is quite small at the minute due to the club having the smallest budget in the division. Most of the team are inexperienced at this level and may struggle to adapt to the speed of the Championship. The only way I can see Yeovil avoiding relegation is if they make Huish Park a fortress. I am sure the fans will certainly make it a very intimidating place to visit.

Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday – Spent most of last season down at the bottom, eventually managing to escape relegation and finish 18th. Dave Jones has failed to really make an impact in the transfer market, with no signings of true quality. I can see Wednesday struggling towards the bottom end of the table once again this season.

Sheffield Wednesday

Barnsley – Barnsley are threatened with relegation just about every season and I can’t see them staying out of trouble once again this year. A strong last ten games kept the Tykes up last season but the team lacks quality compared to some of their rivals. It has also been a quiet transfer market for the Yorkshire club with the arrival of Chris O’Grady, the only key signing.

Doncaster Rovers – Won the League 1 title on the last day of the season is astonishing fashion. Donny won the title after a successful counter-attack after Brentford missed a penalty. I can’t help but think they will struggle in the Championship, much like they did the last time the club found themselves in this division. Manager, Paul Dickov has not got much experience and this may be a factor if the team begins to struggle. Rumours of top signings such as Shay Given and Billy Sharp are circulating, but unless these become reality I think the team will struggle.
